Meet Your Instructor

Darin Matthews, MAM, FNIGP, CPPO, CPSM, C.P.M.

Darin Matthews is the Director of Procurement and Supply Chain for the University of California, Santa Cruz. He has over 25 years of procurement and supply chain management experience in a variety of sectors, and formerly served as President for NIGP: The Institute for Public Procurement. Darin is the author of several books and articles on procurement, including NIGP’s Logistics and Transportation and Effective Supply Management Performance published by the Institute for Supply Management (ISM). His latest book, Public Procurement, is available through Birkdale Publishers. He is also a columnist for Government Procurement magazine and speaks throughout the world on such issues as strategic procurement, sustainable procurement strategies, and global logistics. He is a currently a faculty member for UCSC Silicon Valley Extension and California State University – San Bernardino. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business/Political Science and a Master’s in Acquisition Management. Darin is the recipient of several awards including the Albert H. Hall Memorial Award from NIGP, their highest honor, and the Lewis Spangler Award, bestowed to a supply chain professional based on contributions to the field by the International Federation of Purchasing and Supply Management.

The Curriculum

Procurement Methods and Strategies
In this course, we emphasize and explore the importance of good product specifications, along with strategies for evaluating one product against another. We’ll introduce you to specific examples of leading technologies in procurement, such as e-procurement and shopping basket technology, which save organizations both money and time.

Topics Include:

  • Helpful tools to use in procurement decision making
  • Factors other than cost that should guide procurement decisions
  • When it makes sense to buy based on lowest bid, and when it doesn’t
