Overview of the Norwich M.S. in Leadership Curriculum
The Norwich University leadership curriculum is comprised of a mix of core courses and offerings specific to a concentration or specialization. The core courses focus on cultivating and developing fundamental leadership skills that are applicable to all industries.
At Norwich, students will complete the following three courses prior to choosing a concentration:
Leadership Fundamentals. Students learn the fundamental differences among leadership models.
EQ and Leadership Style. This course can equip students with the tools and information they need to evaluate emotional intelligence.
Leading Change in Organizations. Students in this course learn how to hone their ability to lead groups through transitions without sacrificing synergy.
Concentration courses are designed to sharpen specific skills relating to an area of interest within leadership. These concentrations are associated with primary leadership concepts, such as organizational behavior, and focus on specific elements of business, such as human resources. Students can choose from one of the following concentrations in the Master of Science in Leadership program at Norwich:
Leading Change Management Consulting. The courses in this concentration are designed to help students discover the tips, tools, and techniques necessary to become a successful consultant on change management. Students will study models for implementing change initiatives, evaluate the key attributes of successful consultants, and learn how to adapt models for various situations.
Human Resources Leadership. Courses cover the history and evolution of human resources leadership, the impact of various factors impacting human resources, as well as current trends and future needs. Students can learn how to work with corporate executives to construct strategies that help employees grow and develop as individuals.
Public Sector/Government/Military Leadership. This concentration focuses on the theories and innovation practices of the public sector, government, and military leadership. Students will study leadership theories, operational synergy, and how to lead internal and external stakeholder relationships.
Organizational Leadership. Courses in this concentration examine key leadership concepts, strategic communication, and the principles of leading change. Students can learn about the differences between conceptual and theoretical change models and how to apply change theories in a collaborative manner.
The Norwich Master of Science in Leadership program requires a capstone project for three of the concentrations. The capstone is a journal-ready written project that incorporates the lessons learned from the courses to formulate a theoretical or practical solution—aligned with the student’s career goals—to a key contemporary challenge or organizational issue. The project highlights the student’s critical thinking, analytical, and writing skills while allowing the opportunity to engage in the critical exchange of suggestions and comments throughout the project’s stages. This process can prepare the student to answer employee questions pertaining to their vision and long-term goals in a corporate setting.
